With the wheel still on the ground so that it can't spin, loosen the lug nuts or bolts with the wrench. Put the lug wrench onto a bolt so that the handle sticks out around 9:00 to 11:00 on the wheel. Put one foot on the handle and apply firm but smooth pressure until the nut loosens. Rinse and repeat. On a lot of older cars with rusty nuts and bolts, this can get tough – you may also want to carry a small can of penetrating oil for help breaking loose locked-up lugs.
